Community Interests:
Councillor Mrs Beckett is a member of the Mayoral & Protocol Committee and also serves on the Finance & Scrutiny Committee.
She stood for Stratford-on-Avon District Council and was appointed in 2002.
In 1998, Maureen, in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce, instigated the very first meeting of the Town Centre Management and became Chairman in 1999. The Town Management Partnership, as it is now known, has gone from strength to strength and Maureen is still a very active member and can be regularly seen down on the river in the effort to control the numbers of Canada Geese which is done most successfully through the Geese Peace programme.
She sits on the Stratford-upon-Avon in Bloom Committee, the organisation responsible for the outstanding floral displays in the Town. Maureen also ensures that when the town is not “blooming” it “glows” under its Christmas Lights, for she is also a long serving hard working member of the Christmas Lights Committee.
Maureen is also committed to the Municipal Charities, serving as its Deputy Chairman and is Chairman of the local branch of Talking Newspapers for the Blind which she has held for over 12 years.
Leisure Activities
So rarely at home as she is always out doing Council and Committee work, it seems hardly credible that she still finds time for her hobbies: drama; Maureen is Chairman of the Avonside Players, gardening and swimming. She is a committed Christian and is an active member of the Methodist Church.
